Course Description:

The course is based on Section 7 of The Federal Highway Administration’s Bridge Inspector’s Reference Manual (BIRM) and provides training on the visual, physical and advanced bridge inspection techniques of concrete superstructure elements such as; cast-in-place slabs, tee beams, concrete girders, concrete channel beams, concrete arches and arch culverts, concrete rigid frames, precast and prestressed slabs, prestressed double tees. It course covers the most common concrete structure defects and failures.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will gain the following knowledge and skills:

  • Define common defects that occur on concrete bridges
  • Visual, physical and advanced bridge inspection techniques
  • Evaluate and document the deficiencies that can exist on concrete bridges
  • locations for bearing areas, shear zones, tension zones, and for compression zones
  • Distinguish between cracks of various types, shape and locations
  • Inspection of precast and prestressed concrete members
  • Design Characteristic of primary and secondary members
  • Assessment and NBI rating procedures for inspected elements

Course Content:

The course is based primarily on Section 7 of The Federal Highway Administration’s Bridge Inspector’s Reference Manual (BIRM) and the recording and Coding Guide and emphasis on the numerical ratings of safety related defects, structural defects and deficiencies and to promote uniformity of rating.

Course Quiz:

A minimum of 50 multiple-choice quiz questions will be offered and 70% minimum passing grades are required to successfully complete the course.
